PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy

Master your buoyancy

Diving with perfect buoyancy provides the ability to move underwater with minimal effort, instinctive rising and falling, using less air and most importantly, positioning yourself underwater to observe marine life without disturbing its natural environment.

Astronauts and divers have one thing in common – they operate in a state of zero gravity. This state for a diver is known as neutral buoyancy where you do not sink or float underwater and gravity is as close to zero as you can get on earth. This skill can only be learned over time through practice and training. If you are a new diver or it has been a while since your last dive, the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy course will refine basic skills you have learned as a PADI Open Water Diver and take them to the next level. You will learn, among other things, how to choose the right amount of weights, how to distribute the weights to achieve the correct trim and balance, how to save air by moving smoothly underwater, and how to easily hover underwater in a horizontal and vertical position.

Most importantly, during the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Course you’ll learn how to significantly reduce your air consumption.

What Will You Learn During the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Course?

The training consists of two parts: theoretical and practical.

Theoretical part

Contains sections covering the following topics related to diving with perfect buoyancy:

  • Basic principles of diving with perfect buoyancy – why the ability to swim with perfect buoyancy is important, estimating the proper amount of weights

  • Estimating proper amount of weights – techniques for calculating a proper amount of weights needed for a dive, situations in which a weight check should be done, how to change buoyancy during a dive

  • Ways to improve buoyancy – using a BCD and/or a dry suit to adjust buoyancy, using lungs and breathing to control buoyancy

  • Weights location and distribution – weights location and distribution to achieve a proper trim

  • Streamlining the equipment – assessment of underwater streamlining, the influence of equipment on streamlining

  • Swimming technique – basic swimming techniques and their effect on buoyancy

All the above topics can be studied using PADI eLearning platform. It takes around 2 to 4 hours to go through all the material.

Practical part

The practical part includes a “Buoyancy Clinic”, which is a workshop in the pool and two training dives in open water.

The following skills are practiced during “Buoyancy Clinic” in the pool:

  • Estimating the required amount of weights according to guidelines

  • Performing a pre-dive weight check

  • Practicing controlled descent and ascent

  • Hover – achieving neutral buoyancy

  • Buoyancy control using breathing and lung capacity

  • Swimming close to a ‘sensitive bottom’ without touching it

  • Performing a post-dive weight check

During the two open water dives, the skills mastered during the buoyancy workshops are practiced.

  • Dive 1
Weight check, controlled descent, achieving neutral buoyancy, hover – different positions (horizontally, vertically), depth control using breathing, weight check after the dive

  • Dive 2
Further practice of skills learned during the first dive, effective underwater swimming – learning different methods and swimming techniques
